Ionic equations for simple reactions

In this experiment you will carry out a number of simple test tube experiments, many of which you should have seen at GCSE. Make observations in each case and then try to write full and ionic equations for each one. Checks your observations and equations using the link at the bottom of the page.

1. Calcium carbonate and dilute hydrochloric acid

Video

2. Copper(II) carbonate and dilute sulfuric acid

Video

3. Zinc metal and dilute hydrochloric acid

Video

4. Nickel(II) oxide and dilute nitric acid

The mixture is boiled to speed up the reaction.

NB. Nickel(II) oxide is a category 1 carcinogen. It is not recommended that this reaction is carried out by students. Watch the video!

5. Silver nitrate and potassium chromate solutions

We start with the potassium chromate solution and add colourless silver nitrate solution to it.

6. Barium chloride and dilute sulfuric acid

7. Zinc metal and copper(II) sulfate solution
