Magnesium metal hazard data

Magnesium is commonly available as turnings, a powder and ribbon. It is highly flammable and the resulting burning metal is very difficult to extinguish (it burns in carbon dioxide gas!). Burning metal can be smothered in sand. It burns extremely brightly. Wear eye protection. Do not look directly at the burning metal. Only use small quantities of metal in reactions.

The metal is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE

Dangerous with: Many organic compounds (including alcohols), bromine, chlorine, silver nitrate, oxidizing agents, sulfur, sulfates and metal oxides. Violent or explosive reactions can occur.

Strong acids. A vigorous reaction can take place releasing hydrogen gas.

Disposal: The metal is dissolved in dilute acid. The product is diluted with water and can be poured down the drain.
