Nitric acid hazard data

Both concentrated and dilute solutions of nitric acid are commonly used in the "A" Level laboratory. More concentrated solutions cause severe burns. Unpleasant, yellow blisters form rapidly on contact with the skin. The vapour is very irritating to the eyes and respiratory system. Wear eye protection. With concentrated acid, wear disposable gloves and use a fume cupboard if nitrogen dioxide gas is likely to be released.

Solutions of concentration between 0.1 M and 0.5 M are labelled IRRITANT

Corrosive hazard warning

Solutions of concentration greater than 0.5 M are labelled CORROSIVE

Oxidizing hazard warning

Nitric acid is an OXIDISING AGENT. Contact of the concentrated acid with combustible materials may cause fire.

Dangerous with: Aluminium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, copper, zinc and other metals. A vigorous or violent reaction can take place which can release nitrogen dioxide gas.

Combustible material (many organic substances, including ethanol and ethanoic acid), thiosulfates. Violent reactions may occur.

Disposal: Dilute solutions can be washed down the drain, diluting well with water. More concentrated solutions should be neutralized with sodium carbonate before dilution and washing away.
