This brown gas is produced on decomposition of some nitrates It is very irritating to the eyes and respiratory system. It is very toxic by inhalation, and the serious effects may not be apparent until some time after contact. Wear eye protection and always use a fume cupboard. Students with breathing difficulties should take particular care to avoid inhaling this gas. |

Dangerous with: Fine metal powders (eg magnesium), hydrogen. May ignite spontaneously.
