Study Plan for Practical Work
There are a number of entertaining demonstrations of halogen oxidation reactions. I also like the reaction between chlorine and filter paper soaked in warm turpentine. Dutch metal foil placed in a gas jar of chlorine is also popular with students.
The first three videos show some good reactions which can be done as demonstrations in a fume cupboard.
The reaction between bromine water and iron(II) ions is suitable for students to carry out.
Materials:
| 0.1 M iron(II) sulfate in 0.05 M sulfuric acid (10 cm3) | 0.1 M bromine water (5 cm3) |
| 0.1 M iron(III) chloride in 0.8 M HCl (5 cm3) | 1 M sodium hydroxide solution (10 cm3) |
