Confirming equations by experiment (2)

The reaction of lithium with water

lithium metal label

In this experiment we react lithium metal with water to produce an alkaline solution of lithium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. By using molar gas volume we can work out the link between the number of moles of hydrogen gas and lithium. This allows us to establish which of the following equations is correct:

1. 2Li(s) + 2H2O(l) 2LiOH(aq) + H2(g)
2. Li(s) + 2H2O(l) Li(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)

Watch the video and use the data to work out which is the correct equation. You can check your answer here.
