Some copper(II) complexes

Here we investigate some of the complex ions of copper(II). Watch the video and note down any colour changes which occur during the additions. Try to explain what happens with reference to the stability constants of the various complexes. Check your answer using the link below. Note that I have not used half a test tube of water as suggested in the textbook - the colour change is much easier to see with a smaller volume of water.

In the first part of this experiment we check the colours of a number of copper complexes. Then we add solutions of ligands in turn to the copper-aquo complex. The various stability constants are used to predict whether a ligand exchange reaction will take place, and what observations should be made.
