Hydrochloric acid hazard data

Data also applies to hydrobromic acid and hydroiodic acid

Both concentrated and dilute solutions of hydrochloric acid are commonly used in the "A" Level laboratory. More concentrated solutions cause burns. The vapour is very irritating to the eyes and respiratory system. Wear eye protection. With concentrated acid, wear gloves and use a fume cupboard.

Irritant hazard warning

Solutions of concentration equal to or greater than 2 M but less than 6.5 M are labelled IRRITANT

Corrosive hazard warning

Solutions of concentration equal to or greater than 6.5 M are labelled CORROSIVE

Dangerous with: Aluminium, magnesium and other reactive metals. A vigorous reaction can take place releasing hydrogen gas.

Phosphoric and sulfuric acids. Hydrogen chloride gas is released.

Potassium manganate(VII). An explosion can occur.

Disposal: Dilute solutions can be washed down the drain, diluting well with water. Concentrated solutions should be neutralized with sodium carbonate before dilution and washing away.
