Students can do the hydrocarbon test for bromine and iodine themselves, although I usually demonstrate it as it saves a lot of hydrocarbon solvent. By appropriate dilution the solutions of iodine and bromine are virtually indistinguishable, but this won't limit the enthusiasm of some students to be certain as to which is which.

Allowing students to see the halogens in their various forms is helpful and the sublimation of iodine is quite pretty. We shall see the halogens in action in the next practical.
